Respond with the transponder code and your callsign so the controller knows you have set it correctly.
What if you decide to cancel flight following? You would tell the controller something along the lines of:
“Greenwest Approach, Cessna One Two Three Bravo has the field in sight and would like to cancel flight following.”
The controller will confirm cancellation and instruct you to “squawk VFR,” which means return your transponder to the standard VFR code of 1200.
