Commercial Helicopter Pilot/CFII, Speaker, Mountain Guide

Hi, I'm Jessica.

I hold Commercial Pilot (Rotorcraft–Helicopter) and Certified Flight Instructor–Instrument (CFI/CFII) certificates and ratings. I'm current in the MD 500, AS350, B505, and Robinson R22, R44, and R66 helicopters.

I fly air ambulance missions across Colorado's San Luis Valley with REACH Air Medical Services, and also run my own operation, V3 Initiative, providing flight instruction at every level alongside utility, vertical-reference/long-line, and ferry work — often in demanding mountain terrain.

Safety is the thread through all of it. I believe safety is a process, not a goal, and as a USHST member, VAI Safety Industry Advisory Council member, and FAASTeam Representative, I focus on the human factors, emotional intelligence skills, and decision-making abilities that empower pilots to work effectively with their teams, choose appropriate courses of action, and create the most successful outcomes.

I am passionate about making rotary-wing flying easier to understand and safer to do, and am proud to represent Pilot Institute as we educate the next generation of helicopter pilots.

When I am not flying, you can find me climbing or guiding multi-pitch rock climbs and technical peaks across the mountains of the American West. I also deliver keynote speeches and presentations that help audiences move beyond self-imposed limitations and take meaningful action toward the goals that matter most.

Description

Flying a helicopter is unlike anything else in aviation. Hovering, autorotations, anti-torque control — these are skills that demand a deep understanding of how a rotor system actually works.

Helicopter time often costs over $300 an hour, so every minute you spend learning theory in the air is money you didn’t need to spend. Students who walk into each lesson already understanding the concepts spend their flight time flying — not catching up.

That’s what this course is built for.

Ground School That Works Around Your Life

  • Bite-sized 3–5 minute lessons that fit into even the busiest schedule
  • Lifetime access – revisit concepts years later when you need them
  • Study anywhere – on any device, online or offline
  • Visual animations that make abstract rotary concepts crystal clear
  • Learn at your own pace, with no deadline pressure

Beyond Just Passing the Test

Most ground schools teach to the test and leave you unprepared for real flying. Our approach builds the complete foundation — so you can explain your answers to a checkride examiner and apply them in the cockpit, not just bubble them in on test day.

Here’s What You’ll Learn

Rotary Aerodynamics

  • How a rotor generates and controls lift
  • Dissymmetry of lift, translating tendency, and translational lift
  • Retreating blade stall
  • Vortex ring state (settling with power)
  • Ground effect, in and out of hover

Systems & Anti-Torque

  • Main rotor, transmission, and powerplant fundamentals
  • Tail rotor systems and loss of tail-rotor effectiveness (LTE)
  • Dynamic rollover and ground resonance
  • Reading cockpit instruments and operating limits

Performance & Emergencies

  • Hover ceilings, in and out of ground effect
  • Weight, balance, and density-altitude effects
  • Autorotation theory, entry, and the height-velocity diagram
  • Power and performance planning

Navigation & Flight Planning

  • Reading sectional charts and publications
  • Planning safe, efficient cross-country routes
  • Flight-computer calculations for time, fuel, and distance

Weather & Decision Making

  • Decoding METAR, TAF, and PIREP reports
  • Recognizing dangerous weather before it threatens a flight
  • Building sound go/no-go judgment

Airspace & Regulations

  • Navigating airspace requirements with confidence
  • The responsibilities of pilot-in-command
  • The regulations specific to helicopter operations

And so much more… the full program contains 22 hours of instruction.

We Guarantee It Works
