New York State Drone Laws
These laws apply in the entire state.

New York Parks, Recreation, and Historical Preservation

Prohibits all drone operations in New York State parks and historical sites unless a prior written approval or Special UAS permit has been secured.

New York Department of Environmental Conservation

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation implements different drone rules depending on land classification. DEC has jurisdiction over Wilderness Areas, State Forests, Forest Preserves, Wildlife Management Areas, Unique Areas, Multiple Use Areas, and Campgrounds. Drone pilots are encouraged to visit the New York DEC Drone Policy or page or contact the local DEC office to check for the relevant drone rules.

City and County
Drone Laws
These laws apply in some areas.

Local drone laws in New York refer to policies and regulations that are enacted and enforced at the county, city, or town levels.

 

New York City

  • A permit is required to take off or land an unmanned aircraft within New York City. Among the requirements for a permit application is a Commercial General Liability with UAS Coverage.
  • An exception applies to UAS operations in areas designated by the Department of Parks and Recreation pursuant to Section 18-164(c) of the Administrative Code
  • The application requires a $150 non-refundable fee.

City of Syracuse

Bans the use of drones until there are federal and state laws in place that regulate the government use of drones in a manner that does not violate the 1st and 4th amendments rights of citizens.
