Denver Drone Flying
Locations Map
1. Suhaka Model Airfield (AMA)
Suhaka Field in Cherry Creek State Park, Eaglewood, has been here since the early 1960s. It has a dedicated space for drone operators, run by the Denver R/C Eagles. Drone pilots get their own flight area to separate fixed-wing models from multi-rotor UAVs. The surrounding scenery is impressive, offering camera drone pilots some interesting footage from above.
Another welcome thing about this dedicated airfield is the friendliness of the members. There’s lots of help and club support available for everyone, including beginner-level pilots.
2. East Reservoir
One of the many lakes in Lakewood, the East Reservoir provides a wide open space for drone flight. It is mostly surrounded by residential areas but can be a good spot to take photos of the Red Rocks, as well as the nearby larger lakes.
3. Hutchinson Park
Hutchinson Park is one of a few designated areas in Lakewood for UAS operations. The open space of Hutchinson Park is not particularly big but should be enough for casual drone flight. It provides a great view of the nearby residential areas and the rolling hills a bit farther. The park is a great spot for night photography, although it tends to get busy in the early evening.
The photo is generally facing north and does not show a majority of the park to the east. None of the trails are paved. The main trails are wide and well defined. Many others are somewhat hilly and have been created solely by foot traffic. A ditch runs through the park and usually has some water flowing. Some of the foot paths cross the ditch with no bridges – you have to jump! It’s a fairly small park but has such convoluted topology that a mile and a quarter hike can take more time than you would expect. One area of the ditch goes pretty deep and the overhanging trees make it a bit dark there. The rope swing over the water there could make some fun videos if you take some kids.
4. Chatfield State Park RC Field
Littleton, Colorado is home to the Chatfield State Park R/C Field, just a short drive outside of Denver. It’s a dedicated space for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including drones. The best thing about this airfield is its 3,889-acre space with attractive views. You can take in the large blue lake, and over to the west is the spectacular mountain backdrop.
5. Ketring Park
Ketring Park is one of Littleton’s larger public spaces. It has an expansive grassy area, and a spectacular lake with mature Birch trees along its shoreline. Camera drones can hover above the trees and capture the Rocky Mountain landscape off in the distance.
NOTE: Ketring Park is under the jurisdiction of the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District. Based on the rules, the launching and operation of drones with SSPRD property is prohibited without a permit issued by SSPRD.
