1. Bald Mountain State Recreation Area
Bald Mountain State Recreation Area is close to Lake Orion in Michigan. The park covers an area of 4,637 acres of natural rugged terrain. It has two unattached recreation areas, i.e., north, and south. The AMA R/C airfield here is situated around Lower Trout Lake . It’s a well-run, dedicated space for RC aircraft fans, with an area dedicated for drones.
RC pilots can enjoy flying and developing skills in the wide-open space and diverse landscape. Contact the Skymasters RC Club of Michigan if you want to register with the club.
2. Gallup Park
The most popular park in Ann Arbor, Gallup Park is quite unique for having small islands along the Huron River that you can access via pedestrian bridges. The multiple bridges crossing the river surrounded by trees make for some excellent cinematic aerial shots.
3. Roosevelt Park
In Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood is the 659.2-acre Roosevelt Park. It’s a recreational space with green areas and charming trees that rest in front of an old train station. The park serves as a fabulous front entrance to the historic Michigan Central Train Depot. Another fabulous site from the park is the Ambassador Suspension Bridge that spans majestically across the Detroit River. These amazing structures are magnets for drone users who love to capture history from above.
4. Hines Park
Hines Park is a fairly small park in Detroit, but has plenty of green space for drone flight. The park is popular for its lights during holiday season, so you may want to consider planning a visit around this time. Take note that Wayne County requires a permit for any sort of commercial film or photography within the park.
5. Windmill Point Lighthouse
Close to the edge of Mariner Park sits the 45ft Windmill Point Lighthouse. Windmill Point is the site where the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair meet. This aesthetically-pleasing structure looks over the shores of the Detroit River. It’s a working light that keeps freighter traffic safe as the ships pass through in the night.
This location is a fantastic spot for RC pilots interested in historic lights. The nearby grassy park has ample space to fly camera drones and capture waterfront views with the lighthouse. There are also views of the 982-acre Belle Isle and the uninhabited Peche Island from here.
6. Hart Plaza
You can find the 14-acre downtown Hart Plaza historic site on the banks of the Detroit River. It has an impressive amphitheater and a plethora of commemorative monuments. There’s a lot to see here. Two prominent focal points are of particular interest to drone photographers. They are the Michigan Labor Legacy Monument and the Horace E. Dodge Fountain. This beautiful spot also bestows stunning aerial views of the Detroit Riverwalk and city skyline.
